You only need a number pad for doing shield direction changes (only relevant on bigger ships and in very select situations) and for advanced camera controls. Of course you can just rebind the keys to anything else. TLDR: Star Citizen doesn't require a numpad :P. I've been playing with a 60% keyboard for years, so I'm missing even more keys.
