I highly doubt it's an issue with the shifter. I've had 6 S10"s with an nv3500(94 4wd,2 94 2wd"s,00 2wd ,90 4wd and an 89 2wd. I scored a original Hurst Shifter for $60 they only fit the 94-2000 Dakotas though but I found a adapter that will make it work with the 2001.
